Checking your home for air leaks and insulation problems can save you money on energy bills and reveal minor problems before you need to make major repairs.

What Is an Insulation Inspection?

A home insulation inspection can reveal problems about your home you never considered. For example, if you purchased an older home, you may want to know if the insulation in your attic contains asbestos so that you can replace it with newer insulation. What you can learn from an insulation inspection includes:

  • Whether you’ve lost insulation due to pests, water damage or roof damage
  • If your insulation is keeping inside air in and outside air out
  • An estimate of how much energy you’re wasting on energy to heat or cool your home

A home insulation inspector will measure how thick your insulation is in your walls, attic, roof and ceilings. They also look for signs of damaged insulation, such as discolored pieces of insulation, loose fibers or granules.

Does a Professional Need to Perform the Inspection?

If you’re planning to sell your home or you need to certify the results of an attic insulation inspection or roof inspection, you need to hire a professional inspector. You can perform routine inspections yourself if you take adequate safety precautions and know what to look for throughout your home.

Safety

Due to the risks, it’s recommended you wear a hard hat, eye protection and a ventilator mask when you’re inspecting insulation. Be careful when working in tight spaces, and stay mindful of any fibers that could contaminate your clothing during the inspection. Use foot protection to avoid injuries from nails on walking surfaces.

Correct Insulation Levels

If you experience colder winters, you need to maintain higher insulation levels in your home. You can refer to this guide for the correct insulation levels in your walls, attic and roof.

Air Leaks

Checking for air leaks in your home can be tricky. Some methods people use when inspecting their homes themselves include using a flashlight to see if light escapes through insulated areas of the home or burning incest to track the path of the smoke. If the smoke escapes from the walls, attic or roof, there is an air leak in your insulation.

When to Call a Professional

If you have any concerns regarding asbestos contamination or don’t have adequate experience working with home insulation, it’s easier to schedule an inspection than to perform one yourself.
