Increased Water Bill Uncovers Eleven Foot Crack in Water Line

Joel F. of Delray Beach, Florida had just returned from a vacation when he got a strange letter in the mail. It was from his water utility, alerting him that there was an unusually high amount of water usage coming from his home, that had created a series of significantly inflated water bills that he had missed. He quickly went to inspect the bills for the months prior, and was surprised that he missed these higher than normal balances.

Assuming it was an interior plumbing issue, Joel called up a local plumber to come take a look. After investigating the plumbing and fixtures in the house, it was determined it was likely an exterior water service line problem. Luckily for Joel, several years ago he enrolled in HomeServe’s Exterior Water Line repair plan.

“I remember getting a letter in the mail about HomeServe’s Water and Sewer line repair plans, and figured I’d give the water line offering a chance,” Joel said. “You never think you need those things until you do.”

Joel gave us a call to get the process started. Since it was unclear where the problem was in the water line between Joel’s home and the street, HomeServe first sent out a local and reliable member of HomeServe’s contractor network, Xtra Mile Cooling Plumbing & Electrical, to conduct leak detection on the property the very next day.

“I was relieved that they showed up in a timely manner, and not only that, they were also extremely efficient and professional,” said Joel.

Soon enough, Xtra Mile found the leak in Joel’s water line. It was actually a crack that spanned eleven feet, resulting in a loss of thousands of gallons of water per day.

“When they came back to tell me the size of the crack, I couldn’t believe it,” said Joel. “Nobody expects to hear something like this when it comes to their own home.”

The Xtra Mile crew began the repair of replacing a portion of Joel’s water line with new PVC pipe. Just a short time later, the line was fixed. And the end, Joel saved over $2,100 on the repair along with the stress of coordinating it.

“Needless to say, I was very pleased with the experience,” Joel said. “I’m spreading the word – this could have been an unfortunate lesson to learn for me, but it wasn’t.”
