What Are Some Budget-Friendly Bathroom Renovation Ideas?

From new paint to upgraded fixtures, bathroom remodel ideas don't have to break the bank to make a difference to your space. Here are seven changes you can make in any bathroom.

1. Paint the Walls

Giving your bathroom walls a new coat of paint can help give the space new life. If you choose a paint color in cool, neutral or white tones, it may make a smaller bathroom feel bigger. If you're already happy with the color you have, a fresh coat can make your bathroom look new.

Paint is relatively affordable and most people can DIY this task. You can also hire a professional if you want to.

2. Tile the Floors

Tiling bathroom floors is a great way to cover up old flooring and make the room feel new. There are many options available for every style and budget. It's definitely something you can DIY, but if you have a lot of area to cover, you may want to hire a pro to ensure the work is completed faster.

That said, it's definitely less expensive to go the DIY route — popular peel-and-stick tiles are a great option, and they come in every color, shape and material you could imagine. If you'd rather not cover the entire floor, you could add a perimeter to the outside edges with peel-and-stick tiles or even cover an accent wall or create a backsplash behind the sink to transform your bathroom's overall look.

3. Add New Light Fixtures

If you want to transform the amount of available light in your bathroom, adding new, brighter fixtures can help. Whether you want to replace the vanity lights above a mirror or add dropdown lights over your sink, plenty of options are available in varying color temperatures and styles. Many bathroom light fixtures have dimmers so you can easily adjust the brightness level.

Check out your local home improvement store for options on display to figure out what updates you can make to existing lighting fixtures. Keep in mind that if you plan to add lights where there currently aren't any, you may have to hire an electrician to make sure it gets hardwired correctly. And in a room that also has a lot of water, it's a good idea to at least consult with a professional.

4. Replace Mirrors

Mirrors add dimension to a bathroom and give the illusion of space. If you currently have one big mirror across two sinks, consider replacing it with two trendy mirrors. These can be purchased at home improvement stores and hung yourself. While you're at it, you might consider giving the wall a fresh coat of paint, especially if the shape of your new mirror doesn't match your old one. Some higher-end models have fog-free surfaces and adjustable LED lighting for added functionality.

5. Swap Out Faucets

Another affordable bathroom renovation option is to replace sink faucets. Changing the finish or style can subtly transform the look of your bathroom without requiring you to spend a lot of money. Depending on the type of sink you have, many centerset faucets are available for under $50 (CAD 66). If you can afford to spend a bit more, you could opt for a touchless model or a waterfall-style sink faucet.

6. Replace the Showerhead

Your shower can be a great place to destress and recharge, and replacing the showerhead is an easy way to switch up your self-care experience. Choose a showerhead with a different finish, or opt for a new style, such as one with a portable head. Some models offer the best of both worlds — a stationary showerhead and a portable one you can switch to if needed.

Showerheads vary in price depending on your chosen finish and features, but replacing one is an easy way to start a bath remodel on a budget.

7. Organize With Storage

Clearing bathroom essentials like skincare products from counters can make your bathroom look more organized and give you peace of mind. Consider adding an inexpensive tall storage cabinet where you can store beauty items, towels and linens. This can provide easy access to everything you need while keeping your counters clear.
