Whether it’s gas or electric, every water heater operates on a series of scientific principles and mechanical systems. When one of those fails, the whole process grinds to a halt.

Why Your Water Heater Just Stopped Working

At its core, your water heater is a thermal energy conversion system. It takes energy (usually from gas combustion or electrical resistance) and transfers it into water stored in a tank. When that process breaks down, you usually end up with no hot water. The reasons vary depending on the heater type and which internal components have failed.

Gas Water Heater Troubleshooting: Common Problems

Gas water heaters heat water by burning natural gas or propane in a combustion chamber located below the tank. Heat rises through a central flue to warm the surrounding water.

Key components include the following:

  • Gas valve and supply line: These regulate and deliver gas to the burner. If a closed valve, faulty regulator or gas line problem interrupts the gas supply, the burner won’t light. Gas valve malfunction is also a common cause of failure.

  • Pilot light or ignitor: Older models use a standing pilot light to ignite the burner, while modern ones use electronic ignitors (spark or hot surface types). If the pilot goes out or the ignitor fails, combustion won’t happen. A pilot light that won’t stay lit or a failed ignitor is a typical problem.

  • Thermocouple or flame sensor: These safety devices detect whether a flame is present. If they sense no flame, they signal the gas valve to shut off as a safety measure. A dirty or malfunctioning thermocouple can shut things down even if everything else is working.

  • Combustion chamber and burner: Over time, soot or debris can clog the burner jets or the chamber itself, reducing efficiency or stopping ignition entirely. A blocked flue can also restrict exhaust flow and prevent proper combustion.

Electric Water Heater Troubleshooting: Common Problems

Electric water heaters use resistance heating elements submerged in the tank. Electricity passes through metal coils, which get hot and heat the surrounding water.

Key components include:

  • Heating elements: Usually two (upper and lower), these can burn out over time, especially in areas with hard water that causes mineral buildup. A burnt-out heating element is one of the most common failures.

  • Thermostats: Separate thermostats control each element. They read water temperature and toggle the elements on or off accordingly. A broken thermostat will prevent heating altogether.

  • High-limit switch (reset button): If water gets too hot (usually due to a thermostat failure), this safety switch trips and cuts power. It must be manually reset.

  • Circuit breaker or fuses: If the water heater’s electrical circuit is overloaded, the breaker may trip or a fuse may blow and cut off power entirely. Loose electrical connections can also disrupt power.

Common Problems With Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless (on-demand) water heaters don’t store hot water; instead, they heat it as it flows through the unit. That efficiency comes with a reliance on sensors, flow regulators and electronic control boards.

Key components:

  • Flow sensor: Detects when water is flowing and signals the unit to begin heating. If it fails or gets clogged with sediment, the heater may not activate.

  • Ignition system (gas models): This includes an electronic ignitor and flame sensor. A dirty sensor or delayed ignition can trigger safety shutdowns.

  • Heat exchanger: Transfers energy from gas or electric heating coils to the water. Limescale buildup here can restrict flow and cause overheating errors.

  • Computerized control board: Oversees timing, ignition, temperature and flow. If it fails, the entire unit becomes unresponsive. Most tankless heaters display error codes when faults occur, and these can point to sensor failure, ignition problems or insufficient gas or water pressure.

Water Quality and Sediment Buildup

Regardless of the type of water heater, sediment is a water heater’s silent enemy. Minerals like calcium and magnesium precipitate out of hot water and settle at the bottom of the tank or clog tankless heat exchangers. Over time, this can insulate the burner or heating elements, reducing efficiency and causing rumbling or popping noises, leading to overheating, premature part failure and increasing energy consumption.

Tankless systems are especially sensitive to hard water. If you don't descale them regularly, their narrow passages can become blocked and trigger automatic shutdowns.

Anode Rod Corrosion and Tank Failure

Every tank-style water heater has a sacrificial anode rod designed to attract corrosive elements in the water. Once consumed, corrosion attacks the steel tank.

Signs that the anode rod is fully consumed include rust-colored water, leaks at the bottom of the tank and a rotten egg smell from bacterial reactions with the rod.

This happens because of a phenomenon called ‘galvanic corrosion’, where a more reactive metal (usually magnesium) sacrifices itself to protect the steel. Once depleted, the tank becomes vulnerable.

Thermal Expansion and Pressure Relief

As water heats, it expands, putting pressure on the tank and internal components. That’s why every water heater includes a temperature and pressure relief valve, which vents excess heat and pressure.

If this valve fails, it may drip constantly and make it appear that your heater is leaking, or it may stay closed under extreme pressure and risk tank rupture.

Homes with closed plumbing systems should have an expansion tank to absorb this pressure. Without it, even a properly functioning heater can be damaged over time.

Smart Controls, Error Codes and Electronics

Modern water heaters (especially tankless and high-efficiency models) rely on control boards, thermistors and diagnostics to maintain performance. These add complexity and new points of failure. Power surges, sensor misreads or software errors can all trigger a system shutdown, sometimes requiring a manual reset or part replacement.
