Whatever the reason, surviving a heat wave without air conditioning is entirely possible with the right strategies. It does take effort and awareness, though, because heat isn't something to take lightly. Here's how to stay comfortable — and safe — when the temperature climbs, and the AC isn't running.
The Health Risks of Heat Are Real
Before getting into cooling strategies, it's worth being direct about the risks. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures—especially combined with high humidity—puts real stress on the body. Heat exhaustion sets in when the body can no longer regulate its core temperature effectively.
Heat Exhaustion Symptoms
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea and a rapid pulse. Left unaddressed, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. Heat stroke occurs when the body's core temperature exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and the cooling mechanism fails — symptoms include confusion, loss of consciousness and hot, dry skin. It can be fatal.
High Temperatures are Harder on Vulnerable Groups
The elderly, young children and people with certain health conditions are most vulnerable to the summer heat. But healthy adults aren't immune, especially during extended heat waves when nighttime temperatures stay high and the body never fully recovers. If you're going without air conditioning, you need a plan, not just a fan.
How Humidity and Air Quality Make a Heat Wave Worse
A 95-degree day feels very different depending on whether the humidity is 20% or 85%. High humidity prevents sweat from evaporating efficiently, which is the body's primary cooling mechanism. When sweat can't evaporate, your body temperature rises faster, and you feel hotter than the thermometer suggests. This is what the heat index — the "feels like" temperature — actually measures.
Pro Tip: Fans can actually help somewhat when high temps are made hotter by moisture in the air. The air circulation can help your sweat evaporate faster. But keep in mind that when temps near 100 degrees Fahrenheit, a blowing fan can make a room feel like an air fryer.
Poor air quality compounds the problem. On high-ozone days (or days where wildfire smoke is heavy), opening windows to cool the house can bring in air that aggravates respiratory conditions and adds another layer of physical stress. Check your local air quality index before deciding whether ventilation is a good idea on any given day.

Cross-Ventilation and Nocturnal Cooling
One of the most effective free cooling strategies is also one of the oldest. During a heat wave, keep windows and blinds closed during the day to trap the cooler morning air inside and block direct sunlight. Then, once outdoor temperatures drop in the evening — typically after sunset — open windows on opposite sides of the house to create cross-ventilation, drawing cooler air through the home. A box fan placed in a window facing outward pulls hot air out of the room while cool air is drawn in through windows on the other side. This nocturnal cooling strategy works best in climates with significant temperature swings between day and night. In places where overnight lows barely drop below 80 degrees Fahrenheit, its effectiveness is limited.
Blackout Curtains
Direct sunlight through windows can raise a room's temperature dramatically. Blackout curtains or heavy thermal drapes block that solar heat gain and can make a meaningful difference in how hot a room gets during the day. Combine them with reflective window film for even better results. It's a low-cost investment that pays off quickly in comfort — and in reduced air conditioning costs if and when the system is running.
Evaporative Cooling
In dry climates, a swamp cooler — or evaporative cooler — is a legitimate low-cost alternative to air conditioning. These devices pull warm air through water-saturated pads, cool it through evaporation, then circulate it into the room. They use a fraction of the electricity of a traditional air conditioner and can drop room temperatures by 15 to 20 degrees in low-humidity conditions. The catch is that they're largely ineffective in humid climates, where the air is already too moisture-laden for further evaporation to work. A DIY version — a box fan blowing over a bowl of ice — works on the same principle and provides temporary relief in a pinch.
Hydration, Ice Packs and Personal Cooling
Staying well hydrated is non-negotiable in the summer heat. Thirst is a lagging indicator, meaning you're already partially dehydrated by the time you feel it. Drink cold water consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until you're thirsty. Ice packs or cold wet cloths applied to pulse points — wrists, neck and inner elbows — cool the blood flowing near the surface and bring down body temperature quickly. Cool showers have the same effect. Lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing allows heat to escape from the body rather than trapping it.
Can't Keep Cool Without AC? It Might Be Time to Leave Your House
Know when to give up the experiment. If indoor temperatures are staying above 90 degrees Fahrenheit for extended periods, particularly overnight, the health risk is significant regardless of the strategies above.
Before the summer arrives, create a heatwave bugout plan. Public libraries, shopping malls, movie theaters and cooling centers opened by local governments are all legitimate options — and using them is smarter than suffering through dangerous conditions at home.
