When the grid reconnects, voltage can spike or sag before it steadies, and a house full of motors and circuit boards all pulling power at the same instant is how a restored connection turns into a dead appliance. A few careful minutes now is the difference between power that simply returns and power that takes an appliance with it.

Why You Shouldn’t Turn Everything On at Once

An electrical surge is a brief jump in voltage above the roughly 120 volts a home outlet normally supplies. When power returns after an outage, the grid rarely comes back at a clean, steady level. It can overshoot for a fraction of a second, and that spike travels into whatever is plugged in and switched on. Sensitive electronics like televisions, computers and anything with a circuit board are the most exposed, because a voltage they’re not built to handle can burn out their internal parts in an instant.

Large motors add a second problem. Your refrigerator’s compressor, which is the motor that pumps refrigerant and does the actual cooling, pulls a heavy jolt of current the moment it starts. If several big appliances restart together against an unsteady supply, that combined load can trip a breaker or damage a motor that ran fine yesterday. Bringing things back one at a time keeps that from happening.

How to Turn Your Appliances and Systems Back On

  • A non-contact voltage tester (if necessary)

  • Fresh thermostat batteries (if necessary)

  • Refrigerator thermometer

  • Cooler with ice (if necessary)

Wait for the Power to Steady

Give the electricity five to ten minutes to settle before you turn anything back on. The first minutes after restoration are when voltage is most likely to spike or sag, and anything that’s switched off during that window rides out the roughest part. Switch off or unplug your large appliances and sensitive electronics for now, including anything that came back on by itself. A few lights already on are fine, and they tell you at a glance when the supply is holding steady.

Reset Any Tripped Breakers at the Electrical Panel

Your electrical panel is usually in a basement, garage or utility closet. Before you touch it, make sure the panel and the floor in front of it are dry, with no scorch marks or burning smell; scorching or a burning smell means the panel is arcing or overheating inside. If any of that is present, don’t open it and call a licensed electrician instead. Otherwise, open the door and look for breakers snapped to the middle or off position, out of line with the rest. If the room is dark, read the breaker positions with a flashlight or headlamp. Reset a tripped breaker by pushing it firmly to off, then back to on. A breaker that trips again the instant you reset it points to a fault on that circuit, so leave it off and have an electrician check it.

Check Each Appliance for Electrical Damage

Before you plug a major appliance back in, look it over. If the unit or its cord is wet, don’t touch it. Cut power to that circuit at the panel first, or shut off the main breaker if the circuit isn’t labeled. Otherwise, to confirm the outlet has power, plug in a lamp you know works. If it doesn’t light, the outlet may be dead, and a non-contact voltage tester from any hardware store, held near the slots, reads no voltage on a dead outlet and lights or beeps on a live one. If the outlet is dead but no breaker tripped, a GFCI outlet on that circuit (the kind with RESET and TEST buttons on its face, common in kitchens, baths, garages and outdoors) may have tripped, and pressing RESET can restore power. Watch for warning signs on the appliance itself, including:

  • A burning, plastic or fishy smell from the housing or cord

  • Scorch marks, melted plastic or discoloration around the plug or vents

  • A buzzing, crackling or clicking sound when it powers on

  • A breaker that trips the moment the appliance switches on

Any one of these is a sign the appliance took damage inside. Unplug it, leave it off and have it serviced or replaced by a qualified technician rather than running it to see what happens.

Bring Your Large Appliances Back One at a Time

With the panel and outlets checked, switch your big appliances on one by one, giving each about a minute before the next. Start with the refrigerator and freezer, since they hold the most perishable load. Then bring on your heating and cooling system, water heater and anything else with a motor or heating element. Spacing them out keeps their combined startup current from spiking the circuit, and it lets you catch a problem with one appliance before three others are running. If a unit hums, won’t start or trips its breaker, switch it off, unplug it and have it checked before you run it again.

Restart the HVAC System If It Doesn’t Come Back On Automatically

Central heating and cooling often doesn’t resume on its own after the power drops. Give it a few minutes first. Many air conditioners and heat pumps have a built-in delay before the compressor restarts, which protects it, so wait that out before you assume it isn’t responding. If it still hasn’t come back, restart it at the thermostat: set the system to off, wait a minute, then set it back to heat or cool. If the screen is blank, the thermostat may run on batteries that drained during the outage, and most units pull straight off their wall base to reveal the battery compartment behind, so swap in fresh ones before you decide it’s broken. Set the temperature you want and confirm you feel air moving from the vents within several minutes.

Check the Refrigerator and Sort Perishable Food

Your refrigerator and freezer kept food cold for a while without power, but not forever. A closed refrigerator holds food safely for about four hours, a full freezer for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24 — as long as the doors stayed shut.

Set a refrigerator thermometer on the middle shelf and read it. At or below 40°F, the food is safe to keep. If the power was out longer than about four hours, or the thermometer now reads above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, throw out perishables like meat, poultry, dairy, eggs and leftovers. Bacteria multiply fast above that mark. If the fridge is still warming back up, move the food worth keeping into a cooler with ice until it holds 40 degrees again.

Frozen food that still has ice crystals or reads 40°F or below is safe to refreeze. When you can’t tell how long the power was out, throw the food out instead of tasting it.

Reset and Check Your Surge Protectors

A surge protector guards your electronics by absorbing voltage spikes, and a hard hit during the outage can use up that protection with no outside sign. Many have a status light labeled “protected” or “grounded” that stays lit while the unit still works, so check that it’s on before you trust the strip again. A protector that took a heavy surge often still passes power but no longer shields anything, so replace it if the light is out or the strip is warm or discolored. Its protection is spent by the surges it absorbs rather than by age, so there’s no set number of years at which to swap it out; the indicator light, not the calendar, is the reading to trust. A strip with no indicator light gives you nothing to read, so after a heavy surge, replace it rather than trust it. Plug your computer, television and other sensitive electronics back in through a working protector, one device at a time.
