Why Does the Water in My Pool Look Murky?

Clear pool water doesn't happen by accident. It's the result of balanced chemistry, a functioning filtration system and a little regular attention. When any one of those things slips, the water starts to tell you about it — usually by turning cloudy, milky or flat-out green.

Why Your Pool Water Is Green, Murky, Milky or Cloudy

Low or Imbalanced Chlorine

This is the most common cause of cloudy pool water, full stop. Chlorine is what kills bacteria, algae and other organic contaminants in your pool. When chlorine levels drop too low — or when the chlorine present in the water is tied up fighting contaminants rather than actively sanitizing — the water quickly loses its clarity and conditioners are ripe for algae and bacterial growth.

The fix starts with testing. Free chlorine should sit between 1 and 3 parts per million for a residential pool. If it's low, shock the pool with a chlorine-based shock treatment to bring levels back up quickly. If your free chlorine reads adequate but the water is still cloudy, check your combined chlorine level — the difference between total chlorine and free chlorine. A combined chlorine level above 0.5 ppm indicates chloramines, which are the byproduct of chlorine reacting with contaminants and are far less effective at sanitizing than free chlorine. Shocking the pool water addresses this as well.

pH and Alkalinity Out of Range

Even if the chlorine levels of the pool water are correct, pH that's out of range makes chlorine significantly less effective. The ideal pH for pool water is between 7.4 and 7.6. High pH causes chlorine to lose its sanitizing power, and the water can turn cloudy. Below it, the water becomes corrosive and irritating.

Total alkalinity acts as the buffer that keeps pH stable, and it should sit between 80 and 120 ppm for most pools — some sources recommend up to 200 ppm for certain pool types, so check your pool manufacturer's guidelines. When alkalinity swings, pH follows, and cloudy water is often the result. Test both together and adjust alkalinity first before chasing pH, since alkalinity corrections affect pH as well.

Poor Filtration

A pool filter that isn't running long enough — or isn't working properly — allows contaminants to accumulate in the water faster than they can be removed, and the result is cloudy water that no amount of chemicals will fully clear. Most residential pools need the filtration system running at least 8 to 12 hours a day during swim season to keep up with the load.

If your runtime is adequate but the water is still cloudy, inspect the filter itself. A dirty or clogged filter can't do its job regardless of how long it runs. Clean or backwash the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions and see if clarity improves within 24 to 48 hours. If the filter is old or damaged, replacement may be necessary.

Calcium Scaling

High calcium hardness — above roughly 400 ppm — causes calcium to precipitate out of the water and creates a milky or hazy appearance that's distinct from biological cloudiness. It's more common in areas with hard water and can coat pool surfaces and equipment over time in addition to affecting water clarity.

Lowering calcium hardness typically requires partially draining the pool and refilling with fresh water, then retesting and adjusting. A sequestering agent can help keep calcium in solution in the short term. Testing calcium hardness regularly — the ideal range is 200 to 400 ppm — and catching it early is considerably easier than dealing with it after it's become a significant problem.

This one surprises a lot of pool owners. You shock the pool to clear it up, and it temporarily looks worse. The reason is that shock treatment kills algae and bacteria, but the dead organic material doesn't disappear immediately — it stays suspended in the water and creates that milky or cloudy appearance. This is normal and temporary. Run the filtration system continuously after shocking and the filter will clear the dead material from the water, usually within 24 to 48 hours. If cloudiness persists beyond that, the underlying chemistry issue may not have been fully addressed and warrants another test.

Preventing Foggy Pool Water

The best approach to cloudy pool water is not letting it develop in the first place. Test your water at least twice a week during swim season — pH, free chlorine, total alkalinity and calcium hardness — and make small adjustments as needed rather than letting things drift until a larger correction is required. Small corrections made regularly are far easier than trying to rescue water that's significantly out of balance.

Run your filtration system consistently, clean your filter on schedule and shock the pool water routinely — weekly during heavy use periods — rather than waiting until the water looks bad. Shower before swimming to reduce the oils, sunscreen and other organic material that swimmers introduce to the water, which depletes chlorine and contributes to cloudiness over time.

A little consistency goes a long way. Pools that are tested and balanced regularly almost never go cloudy — and the ones that do almost always reveal a testing schedule that slipped somewhere along the way.
