What can be more annoying than doing a load of laundry and finding it comes out of the machine covered in strange residues and smelling worse than when you put it in? The reason might be fabric softener buildup, a common problem that can affect your washer’s performance, resulting in the issues already mentioned.

Luckily, with a little know-how, you can prevent this problem from recurring and ensure your fabrics leave the washer smelling fresh and clean.

How Does Fabric Softener Create Buildup?

The thick, oily consistency of fabric softener is the culprit. Unlike laundry detergent, which is designed to dissolve completely in water, the ingredients of fabric softeners can stick to the washer’s interior. The problem is worse for people who don’t read the label and use too much fabric softener.

With constant use, a sticky residue forms that attracts an array of particles, including dirt and lint. This residue builds up in the washer line and other parts of the machine.

How Do You Know If You Have Fabric Softener Buildup?

If you identify the problem early, you can take appropriate action before it worsens. Measures you need to take:

  • Look for a waxy or greasy film on your clothes after washing. This is a clear indication of fabric softener buildup.

  • Smell your clothes after washing. If they smell musty or unpleasant, your washing machine might be harboring a buildup of bacteria and mold.

  • Pay attention to how long it takes your washing machine to fill, drain and rinse. If it’s longer than normal, it might be a sign your washing line is clogged.

  • Regularly inspect the detergent and fabric softener dispensers for any visible residue or gunk; it's easy to see.

Step by Step: Cleaning Out the Washer Line and Preventing Buildup

Things You'll Need

  • White vinegar

  • Baking soda

  • Hot water

  • Soft brush or cloth

  • Small bucket or bowl

Step 1: Clean the Detergent and Fabric Softener Dispensers

Remove the detergent and fabric softener dispensers. Soak them in a vinegar solution for 20 to 30 minutes to break down the residue. Scrub away the residue with a soft brush or a cloth. Rinse the dispensers thoroughly with hot water before putting them back in the machine.

Step 2: Clean the Washer Drum

Set your washing machine to the hottest and largest load setting and add four cups of white vinegar to the drum. Run a complete wash cycle. Once the vinegar cycle is complete, add one cup of baking soda to the drum. Run another hot water cycle to deodorize and further clean the machine’s interior.

Step 3: Clean the Washer Line

Turn off the power to the washing machine and unplug it to ensure your safety while performing the next steps.

Depending on your washing machine model, you might need to remove the back panel to access the washer line (consult your machine’s manual for specific instructions). If possible, detach the washer line and soak it in a vinegar and hot water solution for about 20 to 30 minutes to dissolve the buildup.

Flush the washer line with hot water after soaking to clear out any remaining residue. Reattach the line, plug the machine back in and turn the power on.

Step 4: Prevent Future Buildup

Follow these tips to keep your washing machine clean and clear in the future:

  • Follow the fabric softener manufacturer’s recommendations for using its product, as applying too much can lead to residue building up faster than normal.

  • Think about diluting your fabric softener with water before adding it to the dispenser, as this can help prevent thick residue from forming.

  • Run a monthly cleaning cycle with vinegar and baking soda to keep your washing machine free from buildup.

  • Periodically inspect and clean the dispensers and washer line.

  • Use dryer sheets or switch to liquid fabric softeners specifically formulated to be low-residue.
