8 Causes of Squeaky Floors

A squeaky floor is hard to ignore, especially in an otherwise quiet house. The creaks and groans that come from wood floors usually point to movement somewhere in the flooring system. That movement might happen between the finished floor and the subfloor, between the subfloor and the joists or within the materials themselves as they respond to changes in temperature and humidity.

The good news is that most squeaky floors stem from a handful of common causes, and many of them can be addressed without tearing up the entire floor.
What Are Some Reasons Your Floors Are Squeaky?
1. Gaps Between the Subfloor and Joists
When the subfloor isn't fully supported by the joists beneath it, walking across that section causes the plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) panel to flex downward and spring back. That repeated motion creates friction against the fasteners holding the subfloor in place, producing a creak or pop with every step. Gaps can develop over time as lumber dries and shrinks, or they may exist from the original construction if the joists weren't perfectly level.
How to Fix It: Shims
If you have access to the underside of the floor through a basement or crawl space, you can put a shim in the gap. A thin wood shim coated with carpenter's glue can be tapped gently into the space between the joist and the subfloor. Aim to fill the void without lifting the subfloor, which could create new problems.
For gaps that run along a larger section of the joist, apply construction adhesive to the top of the joist before pressing the subfloor down to ensure better contact.
2. Loose or Backing-Out Nails
Subfloors are typically fastened to joists with nails or screws. Over years of foot traffic, seasonal expansion/contraction and general settling, nails can work their way loose. When that happens, the subfloor moves slightly against the nail shaft each time weight passes over it. The sound is often a sharper squeak than the creaking caused by gaps, and it may be isolated to a specific spot.
How to Fix It: Tighten the Layers
The fix depends on access. From below, drive a screw up through the subfloor and into the finished floor (use a screw short enough not to puncture the surface) to pull the layers tight. From above, if the finished floor is hardwood, you can drive a trim-head screw through the board and into the subfloor and joist, then fill the small hole with wood filler. Specialty squeak-repair kits use breakaway screws designed for this purpose and leave almost no visible trace.
3. Seasonal Humidity Changes
Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs and releases moisture depending on the surrounding environment. In humid months, floorboards absorb moisture and expand. In dry winter months, they shrink. This cycle creates gaps between boards, loosens the fit against the subfloor, and can cause individual planks to rub against one another or against their fasteners.
How to Fix It: Humidity Control
Controlling indoor humidity is the most effective long-term solution. Running a humidifier during the dryer heating season keeps relative humidity closer to the 35 to 55% range that most wood flooring manufacturers recommend, and a dehumidifier or air conditioning during summer prevents excessive swelling. These measures won't eliminate all movement, but they reduce the extremes that lead to persistent squeaking.
4. Flooring That Wasn't Properly Acclimated
Before installation, wood flooring needs time to adjust to the home's moisture and temperature conditions. Skipping or shortening this acclimation period means the flooring goes down at a moisture content that doesn't match its environment. Once installed, the boards either absorb moisture and swell or release moisture and shrink, depending on the gap between their initial state and the home's conditions.
How to Fix It: Close the Gaps
If improperly acclimated flooring is already squeaking, the fix usually involves addressing the resulting gaps or loose boards. Stabilizing humidity levels can help, but boards that shrank significantly may need to be re-secured or, in severe cases, replaced. For future installations, manufacturers typically recommend leaving bundled flooring in the room where it will be installed for at least 72 hours.
5. An Uneven or Damaged Subfloor
The subfloor supports everything above it. If the subfloor has high spots, low spots or areas damaged by moisture, the finished flooring won’t sit flat. Walking across these uneven sections can make boards rock or flex, and the resulting movement produces squeaks. Water damage is a common culprit. A slow leak from a bathroom or kitchen can soften plywood or OSB without being immediately visible from above.
How to Fix It: Even Out the Subfloor
Fixing an uneven or damaged subfloor typically involves correcting the surface itself. This may include sanding down high spots, filling low areas with floor-leveling compound, or replacing compromised sections entirely. These repairs often require removing the finished flooring in the affected area.
In some cases, if the issue is minor and you can access it from below, adding blocking between joists can stabilize the subfloor and reduce movement without a full tear-out. Blocking involves installing short sections of lumber snugly between adjacent joists to limit flexing and distribute weight more evenly across the floor system.

6. Joist Problems
Floor joists can squeak if they’re warped, undersized for the span or improperly spaced. A twisted or crowned joist creates an uneven bearing surface for the subfloor. Joists that have dried and shrunk since installation may also lose full contact with the subfloor above or the beam below, allowing movement at those connection points.
How to Fix It: Major Structural Repairs
Joist-related squeaks usually require framing-level repairs. One common method is sistering a joist, which involves fastening a new framing member directly alongside an existing joist to increase stiffness and restore proper support. The added joist works together with the original to reduce flexing and movement across the span.
7. Loose Floorboards
Sometimes the squeak originates not from the subfloor or framing but from the finished flooring itself. Hardwood planks that have worked loose from the subfloor, or tongue-and-groove joints that no longer fit snugly, can rub against one another when walked on. This is particularly common in older homes where the original flooring was face-nailed, and the nails have loosened over decades of use.
How to Fix It: Secure the Floorboards
Re-securing loose boards typically involves driving screws or specialty flooring nails through the board and into the subfloor. Pilot holes help prevent splitting, and countersinking (recessing the fastener head slightly below the wood surface with a specialized countersink bit) allows you to fill it with color-matched wood filler. For squeaks that occur between two boards rubbing together, work powdered graphite or talcum powder into the joint.
8. Inadequate Fastening During Installation
How you attach flooring during installation plays a major role in whether it will squeak later. Subfloors fastened with too few nails or screws, or with fasteners that missed the joists, start at a disadvantage. Finished flooring installed with insufficient adhesive or with a nail gun set to the wrong pressure may not bond tightly to the subfloor. How to Fix It: Look Below the Floor
Addressing installation-related squeaks depends on where the problem lies. Additional screws driven through the subfloor into the joists can reinforce an under-fastened subfloor. For finished flooring, surface fastening with countersunk screws remains the most reliable option when the squeak's location is clear. Floating floors may need to be partially lifted to correct expansion issues or to apply adhesive in problem areas.
How to Locate the Source of the Squeak
Finding exactly where a squeak originates makes the repair much simpler. If access permits, have someone walk slowly across the squeaky area while you watch and listen from below. Look for movement in the subfloor or gaps between the subfloor and joists. If you can't get below the floor, walk the area yourself and pay attention to whether the sound seems to come from the surface boards, from below or from the joint between two planks
Marking squeaky spots with painter's tape helps you keep track of problem areas as you work. Some squeaks are easier to hear than to feel, so moving slowly and shifting your weight from one foot to the other can help pinpoint the precise location.
Common Floor Squeak Sounds and What They Typically Indicate
Different squeaking noises can offer clues about where the problem originates and what kind of movement is occurring within the floor system. While sounds alone aren’t definitive, they can help narrow down the likely cause before you begin inspecting or making repairs. Some of the most common include:
Sharp squeak in a single spot. Often points to a loose nail or screw rubbing against the subfloor or joist as weight passes over it.
Low creak that spans several steps. Commonly associated with subfloor movement over joists, especially where gaps or uneven support exist.
Soft rubbing or chirping between boards. Typically caused by adjacent floorboards expanding, shrinking or rubbing together due to humidity changes.
Widespread noise across a room. May indicate a broader issue such as subfloor irregularities, joist deflection (slight bending or flexing of the joists under load) or insufficient fastening during installation.
When to Call a Professional to Fix Creaking Wooden Floors
While many squeaky floor fixes are manageable if you're comfortable with basic tools, some situations call for professional evaluation.
If squeaking comes with visible sagging, a bouncy feel when you walk or signs of water damage, the problem may involve structural framing. Similarly, if you're unsure whether your floor system uses engineered trusses, don't cut or modify them without professional guidance. Floors with radiant heating systems also warrant caution, as driving screws or nails without knowing the tubing layout risks puncturing the system.
