Typical issues to consider include the amount of hot water used, how quickly your water heater recovers and the possibility that there's something wrong with the water heater.

Water Heater Size

The right water heater capacity is enough to meet your domestic needs. If you have a large family in the home, you'll likely need a bigger water heater. The U.S. Department of Energy's water heater spreadsheet helps you determine a good size for your needs.

Water Heater Recovery Rate

If you find your water heater doesn't provide enough hot water, check the unit's recovery rate. If this is too low, water may take a long time to heat up after use.

The recovery rate is the volume of hot water, in gallons per hour, that the water heater produces. You'll find this figure on your water heater's nameplate or sticker.

What Are Some Reasons My Water Heater Runs Out So Quickly?

There are several reasons a large water heater may have no hot water.

Improper Thermostat Setting

A thermostat set too low may cause you to run out of hot water. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends water heater temperature settings of 120 degrees Fahrenheit. That setting is hot enough to support most residential uses, though you can increase it if you're running short of hot water regularly. Never set your water heater thermostat higher than 140 degrees to avoid the risk of scalding.

Water Heater Fault

Possible faults include a broken dip pipe, water leaks and sediment buildup. These issues can reduce the hot water supply or lead to increased power consumption.

Electric Water Heaters

Electrical issues to consider include a thermostat that's switching too low and a faulty heating element. Some water heaters have two elements, and a failed element halves water heating capacity. Other possible problems are a tripped circuit breaker and poor electrical connections.

Gas Water Heaters

Gas water heaters use a control valve to manage the burner and water temperature. Check that yours isn't on the vacation setting, nothing is blocking the vent and the burner is working correctly.

Old Water Heater

Older water heaters may not have adequate insulation, leading to heat loss from the tank. They may have smaller elements than modern water heaters, so it takes longer for the water temperature to recover. Old heaters are less efficient and use more electricity.

If you have the right tools and experience, consider using one or more of the water heater troubleshooting tips below if your hot water supply is lacking.

Check the Thermostat

If you suspect the thermostat is faulty, remove it and place it in a pot of water on the stove. Heat the water slowly, tracking its temperature with a separate thermometer.

Use a circuit tester to determine when the thermostat switches on. Note what temperature causes that action. Replace the thermostat if it doesn't switch at the set temperature.

Flush the Water Tank

Switch off your water heater and let the water inside cool. Connect a hose to the drain valve and flush all sediment from the water heater. Discharge this water down the drain.

Check the Dip Tube

While the tank is empty, disconnect the cold water supply to the top of the tank. You'll see a plastic dip pipe inside the nipple. Carefully remove the tube and check for cracks, blockages or breaks. Replace the tube if necessary.

Inspect the Electric Heating Elements

With the power off, remove the element access panel. Check each element for continuity using a multimeter. If you have hard water or the element is faulty, remove the element with a special wrench. Remove any scale with a brush or cloth after soaking the element in vinegar and water for an hour. Use a new gasket when you replace the element.

Inspect the Gas Burner

Check that the pilot light stays on. Where possible, inspect the burner flame. The flame should be a steady blue color. A flickering or yellow flame indicates the burner isn't working properly. Switch off the gas supply and check that the burner vents are clean and not blocked. If this doesn't resolve the problem, call in a professional.

Check for Leaks

A small hot water leak wastes a lot of hot water. Check for water leaks around the heater and on all accessible hot water pipes. Also, check for leaking faucets.

When to Call in a Professional

Call a professional if you can't safely find the source of your hot water problems. Never work on gas systems unless you're qualified to do so. The same applies to repairing electrical and plumbing faults. When in doubt, call a licensed plumber to check hot water issues and service your water heater.
