What Is a Drawer Dishwasher?
A drawer dishwasher is a dishwasher that loads from the top by pulling out a drawer rather than folding down a door. They come in single-drawer and double-drawer configurations — a single drawer typically holds about a half load compared to a standard dishwasher, while a double-drawer unit stacks two independent drawers that can run simultaneously or separately. Fisher & Paykel is the brand most associated with the format and has been making them since the 1990s, though other manufacturers now offer their own versions.
The key difference from a standard dishwasher isn't just aesthetic. Because the wash tub itself moves in and out with the drawer, the plumbing connections have to accommodate that movement. This requires a different approach than the fixed connections used in a standard unit.
How the Plumbing Handles a Dishwasher in a Moving Drawer
This is the part that seems like it should be complicated, and the engineering solution is actually straightforward. Both the water supply line and the drain hose on a drawer dishwasher are made with enough slack and flexibility to accommodate the full range of drawer movement without kinking or pulling tight. The connections use flexible hoses rather than rigid lines, and they're routed with enough length to move freely as the drawer extends and retracts through hundreds or thousands of cycles.
The water inlet connection feeds into the unit at a fixed point on the chassis — not on the drawer itself — and internal flexible tubing carries water from that fixed connection into the moving drawer. The drain hose works similarly, connecting to the fixed body of the unit and routing flexibly from there. From the homeowner's perspective, the external plumbing connections look almost identical to a standard dishwasher installation.

Water Inlet and Supply Connection
Drawer dishwashers connect to the hot water supply the same way a standard dishwasher does — typically via a 3/8-inch compression fitting connected to the hot water shut-off valve under the sink. The supply line runs from that valve to the inlet valve on the dishwasher unit. Most drawer dishwashers require a standard hot water connection, and the installation manual will specify the exact fitting type and water pressure requirements for the model.
Is an Air Gap Still Required?
Yes. Where air gaps are required by local plumbing code, drawer dishwashers are subject to the same requirement as standard units. An air gap is a physical backflow prevention device mounted on the countertop or sink deck that prevents contaminated drain water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. Where an air gap isn't required or isn't practical, a high loop installation (routing the drain hose up as high as possible under the counter before connecting to the sink drain or garbage disposal) serves as an alternative backflow prevention method in many jurisdictions. Check your local code before deciding which approach to use.
The drain hose on a drawer dishwasher connects to the sink trap, a Y-branch tailpiece, or a garbage disposal connection under the sink, exactly as a standard dishwasher drain would.
Common Plumbing Issues
The most frequently reported plumbing issue with drawer dishwashers is drain hose kinking or improper routing during installation, which causes drainage problems and can leave standing water in the drawer after a cycle. Making sure the drain hose is routed without sharp bends and secured properly during installation prevents most of these issues.
Leaks at the water inlet connection are another common complaint, usually the result of a fitting that wasn't fully tightened during installation or a supply line that wasn't properly seated. A slow drip at the inlet connection under the cabinet is worth catching early. Left unaddressed, it causes the same kind of cabinet floor damage any under-sink leak does.
Beyond those installation-related issues, drawer dishwashers don't have plumbing problems that are specific to the format. The flexible internal hoses that handle drawer movement are generally durable and not a common failure point in well-maintained units.
