PSA: Extension Cords Are Not Permanent Wiring

You rearrange a room. You buy a new lamp. You finally mount the TV where it makes sense. And then you realize there’s no wall outlet anywhere near where you need power. You grab an extension cord, run it along the baseboard, maybe tuck it under a rug and tell yourself you’ll deal with it later. Except “later” turns into months. Or years.

Extension cords are designed for temporary wiring, not long-term solutions, and there’s a reason for that. Extension cords are built to carry power safely for short durations under controlled conditions. They aren’t meant to replace a properly installed wall outlet, nor are they intended to sit under carpets, behind drywall or pinned along trim indefinitely. When you start using an extension cord permanently, you move into a gray zone where wear, heat buildup and overload risks increase quietly over time.
Why Can’t I Just Leave the Extension Cord Where It Is?
The biggest issue is heat.
Every electrical cable has a rated capacity, which is the maximum amount of current it can carry safely. When you plug in a device, especially something high draw like a space heater, microwave or window AC unit, the cord can warm up. If that warmth has nowhere to dissipate, — say it’s under a rug or bundled with other cables — it can get hotter than intended.
That’s where extension cord fire hazards come in.
Permanent wiring inside walls is protected by insulation, secured properly and rated for long-term use. Extension cords aren’t. They’re more prone to physical damage, fraying and gradual degradation. Over time, even small cracks in the outer jacket can expose internal conductors, increasing the risk of shock or electrical fire.
There’s also the overload issue. It’s common to plug an extension cord into a power strip and then plug several devices into that strip. Suddenly one wall outlet is supporting a chain of devices that may collectively exceed the safe capacity of the circuit. Nothing dramatic may happen at first. But heat builds slowly, connections loosen and insulation weakens. Problems tend to show up after extended use.
Common Extension Cord Mistakes
A few habits are especially risky, such as:
Running cords under rugs or carpets. This traps heat and can hide damage. If the cord gets pinched or frays, you won’t see it.
Stapling or nailing cords to walls. That can pierce insulation and expose live wires.
Using indoor cords outside. Outdoor-rated cords have thicker jackets designed to withstand moisture and temperature swings.
Daisy-chaining cords together. Plugging one extension cord into another can increase resistance and heat.
Using lightweight cords for heavy loads. Not all cords are created equal. A thin cable powering a refrigerator or heater is asking for trouble.

If you do need to use an extension cord, keep it temporary and follow some basic safety guidelines:
Use the shortest cord necessary. Extra length increases resistance and the chance of tangling or damage.
Match the cord’s rating to the appliance. Check the amperage and choose a heavy-duty cord if needed.
Keep cords visible and uncovered. Don’t run them under rugs, furniture or doors.
Inspect cords regularly. Look for cracks, exposed wires or loose plugs.
Plug directly into a wall outlet whenever possible. Avoid plugging extension cords into power strips or other cords.
Unplug when not in use. This reduces wear and eliminates unnecessary risk.
Extension Cords Just Aren't a Solution For a Lack of Outlets
Think of proper extension cord use as borrowing power temporarily, not relocating it permanently. If you consistently need power in a spot where there’s no outlet, that’s a sign. The real fix is usually adding an outlet, not an extension cord.
Hiring a licensed electrician to install a new wall outlet is often more affordable than people assume, especially if there’s an existing circuit nearby. It solves the problem at the source and eliminates the extension cord fire hazard altogether.
Another option is installing a floor outlet, particularly in larger rooms where furniture floats away from the walls. These are common in newer builds for exactly this reason.
If the issue is limited outlets in general, adding a new circuit or upgrading existing wiring may be worth discussing with an electrician. Modern households simply use more electricity than homes were originally designed to handle.
In some cases, surface-mounted raceway systems can provide a cleaner, safer way to route wiring along walls without opening drywall. They’re not as seamless as hidden wiring, but they’re far safer than relying on a cable snaking across the room indefinitely.
And if you’re just short on plug space in a single location, a properly rated power strip with built-in surge protection is safer than chaining extension cords together. Just be sure it’s used within capacity and plugged directly into the wall.
