Federal authorities have added some 130,000 coolers to an ongoing product safety recall already affecting more than 1 million Igloo-brand coolers that reportedly have caused over 100 injuries — including 26 fingertip amputations. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the action on May 8, expanding the initial recall from February involving 90-quart coolers with a tow handle.

“The tow handle can pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, posing fingertip amputation and crushing hazards,” the commission stated in the recall, which notes that Katy, Texas-based Igloo Products Corp. has received 78 reports of fingertip injuries, including over two-dozen resulting in fingertip amputations, bone fractures or lacerations.
The recall affects Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers manufactured before January 2024 and sold for $80 to $140 at Costco, Target, Academy, Dick’s, and other stores nationwide as well as online at Amazon.com, Igloocoolers.com and other websites, from January 2019 through January 2025. The coolers, sold in multiple body and lid color combinations, have a tow handle with the brand name printed on the side. Owners can find the date of manufacture imprinted on the bottom of the cooler in a circular pattern with an arrow pointing to the month and the last two digits of the year inside the circle. Between the two recalls, nearly 50 model numbers — which can be found here — are affected; the model number can be found on labels affixed to the bottom of the cooler. The two recalls combined also comprise about 67,000 coolers in Canada.
The commission instructed consumers to stop using the recalled coolers immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free replacement handle.

In the meantime, the manufacturer warned, owners should be aware of pinch points around handles, latches, hinges, lids and other moving components of the cooler, and to avoid placing their hands and fingers near those places.
“Injuries could occur if the handles, latches, hinges, lid, and other moving components on coolers are not used properly,” Igloo said in a statement. “Use safe practices on latches, handles, hinges when using them. Be aware that loose clothing and jewelry may also be caught in pivot areas of your cooler. Children should be supervised if present when using a cooler.”
