Norwalk, Conn. (October 16, 2019) – HomeServe USA announced today the four winners of its HomeServe Cares Foundation (HSCF) Caring for Community grant program. The initiative, launched earlier this year, awards grants to non-profits and municipalities to support community-based programs. This second round of grants was awarded to four organizations across the nation that address home repairs and modifications that enable older residents to age in place safely.

Kansas City-based The Shepherd's Center, an interfaith, multicultural non-profit that provides services that reach more than 1,200 people in Wyandotte County, focusing on health enrichment, education and home services. The HSCF Caring for Community grant will enable the organization to execute a “weatherization blitz” project to help protect the homes of 120 senior citizens in the community through projects like HVAC tune-ups, replacing air filters, and improving insulation.

“The people at The Shepherd's Center of Kansas City support residents whose desire is to live safely and comfortably in their own home,” explained HomeServe CEO John Kitzie. “Through projects like their Minor Home Repair program, which serves low income senior citizens struggling to age-in-place in the urban core of Kansas City, The Shepherd’s Center makes a lasting, positive impact in the communities it supports.”

Cultivate, a non-profit based in Boulder, Colorado that provides Safety Net services for adults aged 60 and over while also creating meaningful volunteer opportunities to improve the quality of life for seniors and their families. With a HSCF grant injected into the group’s Fix-It program, Cultivate will be able to provide free home repairs and modifications to improve the safety for even more seniors living in their own homes.

“For seniors and their families, it’s unsettling to think what could happen inside one’s own home - a place where you should feel safe and protected. All too often, a loved one can fall and become seriously injured,” shared Kitzie. “The Fix-It program not only supports senior citizens, but also gives peace of mind to their families by installing safety features that help prevent falls and other hazards around the home.”

The Denver-based Brothers Redevelopment, Inc., a non-profit that provides housing and a variety of housing-related services to the region’s low-income, elderly and disabled residents. HomeServe’s grant will support the group’s Home Modification & Repair program, which covers the costs for low-income seniors to have a contractor make necessary home modifications and repairs so they can live safely and healthily at home.

“Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. has a demonstrated history of providing access to housing, reducing fall hazards, increasing home safety and supporting the ability to age in place,” Kitzie described. “By helping low-income seniors cover the expense of a home repair, they’re giving a very vulnerable group of people the opportunity to create a better at-home living experience.”

The final winner of the HSCF Caring for Community grant program is Columbus, Ohio-based LifeCare Alliance. This non-profit provides a comprehensive array of essential home health care services to thousands of older adults and individuals living with medical challenges. LifeCare Alliance’s Chores program will receive a HSCF grant to improve the living conditions of specific homes through electrical and plumbing maintenance, grab bar and railing installations, and floor and drywall repairs.

“There is a high demand for assistance from LifeCare Alliance’s Chores program throughout Columbus area,” Kitzie said. “It’s our pleasure to be able support the people in Columbus and to specifically help older citizens age in place in such a vibrant and growing city.”
