At HomeServe, caring for people is in the fabric of our corporate culture. We recognize that everyone needs some help once in a while, so we take pride in giving back to the people and communities that we serve through the HomeServe Cares Foundation (HSCF). HomeServe Cares Pro-bono Repairs and Helping Hands programs are two ways the HSCF demonstrates our commitment to caring for people.
How it works
The HomeServe Cares program assists eligible homeowners with free repairs when they are faced with a service emergency. HomeServe will arrange for emergency repairs at no cost to the homeowner through HomeServe’s network of local, licensed and qualified contractors. To be eligible, a homeowner needs to meet the following general criteria:

Paul T, a 96-year-old, World War II and Korean War veteran with health issues that require the use of oxygen, lived with his extended family in his Waukegan, Illinois home. Paul’s son found six inches of grey water in the family’s unfinished basement and realized that the water had ruined the water heater and the family was without hot water. Fearful for his dad’s health, his son sent Paul to stay with a family member as they tried to address the issue. Turns out that repairs were expected to cost approximately $3,000 – more than the tight-knit family could afford. Alerted to the family’s troubles, HomeServe sent Rockland Plumbing on an emergency, after-hours call to pump the grey water out of the basement.
In addition to pumping out the basement, Rockland Plumbing returned a few days later at HomeServe’s request to clean out the sewer line that was the source of the problem – the line had been infiltrated with roots. Rockland Plumbing used an auger and cutting tool to cut back the roots. Since root intrusion is a persistent problem, the company also installed a clean out, digging approximately six feet by hand, around the natural gas service line and an abandoned water service line, down to the sewer line so they could install it. Once the basement was free of water, HomeServe also arranged for the installation of a new water heater, returning hot water to the family’s home – all of it at no cost to Paul and his family. “When you have a veteran in a situation like that, your heart goes out to them,” John Kitzie, HomeServe CEO said. “This is someone who served our country, so it is our great honor to be serving him now.”
