When you have a leaking radiator it’s important to find the source of the leak and fix it before the problem escalates. Follow the steps in this article to find out how to fix a leaking radiator.

Why is my radiator leaking?

  • A pinhole leak on a radiator can be a sign of internal corrosion.
  • This can occur when debris that collects during installation hasn’t properly been removed, and this can occur within weeks of the system being fitted.
  • Or it could be a sign of air being drawn into the system, due to an inherent problem with the system.
  • If the radiator has a pinhole leak, replacement of the radiator is the only option.
  • Cleansing of the heating system should be carried out before replacement. An inhibitor should also be added after installation, following manufacturer’s instructions.

If the leak is on a joint

  • If the radiator is leaking on the valve joint, it may be possible to tighten this, tightening this gently may be all that is required.
  • If the valve itself is leaking, this would be a job for a registered heating professional.
