It’s time to open the windows, let in some fresh air, and perhaps treat a room or two to a makeover, especially if you haven’t tried something new for a while.

Here, we share the 5 biggest spring interior design trends, and explain how you can achieve these in your home, even if you don’t have a large budget to work with. So, no matter if you want to beautify your bedroom, liven up your lounge, or make your kitchen incredibly cool, we have some tips that are sure to inspire you.

1. Add some metallics

It sounds like it would be a pretty easy thing, to source a simple, beautiful and really well-made white metro tile. Yes there's lots of plain white tiles out there, but nothing with that little bit of something special that sets it apart from the rest – so we decided to make our own. Well the work was already half done for us, Claire created our Crackle Pendant Light and the finish was just so good, we knew we needed to make a tile to match. Claire rolls, cuts and fires each tile by hand but the very best bit is applying and then wiping off our carefully formulated black iron oxide stain, this is the moment the unique but really rather subtle crackly surface appears. If you'd like to see the beauty of these tiles in real life we have a whole wall of them in the Millhouse at Cotes Mill and the Potting Shed in New York too. #deVOLKitchens

Metallics have been a popular home décor staple for a while now, but the type of metallics that are entering the limelight have changed for 2019. For example, stainless steel and nickel tones are no longer the top choice for kitchens and bathrooms, as gold, silver, and brass have become the new trend.

Brass taps in particular have quickly become an interior design favourite, as they complement both modern and traditional kitchens and bathrooms, and can also add something extra to a monochrome room without being garish, or taking anything away from your chosen colour scheme. Also suitable for both marble and wooden kitchens and bathrooms, brass taps bring a bit of luxury and sophistication to the space without breaking the bank.

Another metallic that deserves a space in your home this spring is copper, which is taking over where rose gold left off in 2018. With similar red and orange tones, and earthy feel, to the ones that rose gold has, copper is more subtle and natural looking which means that it complements a whole range of interior design choices, and copper items should simply update your home with barely any effort required from you.

Try copper pans or knives in the kitchen, soap dispensers and towel rails in the bathroom, or photo frames, mirrors, and storage baskets in the bedroom. Just adding hints of copper is sure to liven up your room of choice, or you could select larger pieces of furniture or decorative items to make a big statement, if your budget allows.

2. Add plenty of texture

Textures are another huge trend this spring, with a particular emphasis on natural materials which are both stylish and cosy. The key to achieving this trend is mixing a number of different textures using throws, cushions, and blankets to create something that looks both stylish and inviting.

There are loads of different ways to mix up textures and make them look interesting. For example, fringing is going to be huge this year, so investing in items with fringing will mean that you cover both trends in one. The same goes for pompoms, and these cute details can be found on everything from footstools and throws to wall hangings and lamps!

One of the top materials to consider this spring is luxurious velvet, as this rich material is showing up in bedrooms and living rooms where it adds sophistication and unrivalled style. Opt for a velvet sofa or headboard to make a big statement, or, once again, rely on scatter cushions, throws, and other smaller accessories to bring this texture into your home.

3. Add a pop of colour

There are plenty of fabulous colours that are on trend this spring, so lots for you to choose from when deciding on your new home décor scheme. The trick is to be fearless when it comes to adding a bold colour, as you can always start with small items before moving onto larger pieces when you feel comfortable with it.

For living rooms, we suggest rich and luxurious colours to make the space feel warm and inviting. Think reds and forest greens which are very sophisticated and easy to maintain. Of course, buying a sofa or large piece of furniture in one of these colours would make the biggest statement, but scatter cushions, prints, decorative accessories, and other soft furnishings offer a great way to add a new colour to your living room without needing to make a huge change.

Soft pinks are also finding their way into interior design palettes this spring, and we love using this colour in bedrooms to give them a calming yet trendy feel. These pink tones work really well with greys and creams, so if your bedroom already uses these colours you will find it easy to add some pops of pink with new bedding, a statement armchair, or perhaps a cosy rug.

Another colour to consider is mustard, a dusky yellow tone that has become increasingly popular over the years and has a retro feel to it too. Mustard is one of the best accent colours that you can choose, and we suggest adding it to your living room or bedroom using cushions, window dressings, photo frames, vases, throws, and rugs to really draw the eye to this wonderful colour.

4. Create a dark kitchen

Gone are the days when kitchens should be light and airy, as this spring it is all about taking your kitchen to the dark side with blacks and navy blues. There are plenty of areas in your kitchen where you can introduce these dark shades, including the walls, floors, kitchen cabinets, the splashback, and simply in your utensils and accessories for a more subtle approach.

If the idea of decorating your entire kitchen in black or navy is a bit daunting, opt for a feature wall so that just one area uses this colour to bring the trend into the room. Dark kitchens have a practical element too, as they are less likely to show spills and scrapes than lighter coloured kitchens, which makes them a great option for those with children and pets.

The dark kitchen trend can be tied in nicely with the Scandi trend, another popular choice this spring, as this theme uses sharp shapes and a dark palette to create spaces that are truly fascinating to look at. Try arranging a few dark utensils or accessories in an interesting way on your work surface to create the look for yourself.

5. Bring the outdoors in

With the environment being at the forefront of many people’s minds, it is unsurprising that one of the 5 biggest spring interior trends is bringing the outside in. There are lots of great ways to make your home feel like an outside space, and with the right items you can do this in a way that makes your room feel fresh and calming.

One of the simplest ways to bring the outside into your home is with tropical print décor and fabrics. We love how great a tropical leaf print looks on a dark background, and finding wallpaper or soft furnishings that feature this look is guaranteed to bring a relaxed feeling into the space. You want to aim for a print that is sophisticated rather than cartoony, and be brave when opting for a bold print – you won’t regret it!

Spring will also see the introduction of a carnival theme into many homes, and this fits nicely with trying to bring the outside indoors as it features lots of tropical plants, bright flowers displayed in eye-catching vases, plant and bird print fabrics, and a generally fun and vibrant feel. To tone down the look, mix carnival style pieces with neutral tones and natural materials, such as wood and linen, which will calm everything down and enable you to draw attention to key items within the room.

For something a little bit out there, you could try adding the living wall trend to your home. These lush and leafy walls have previously been seen in commercial buildings, such as shopping centres and office receptions, but they have now been making their way in people’s homes, and into small gardens, balconies, and terraces too.

The perfect way to bring greenery to your home, a living wall will add an instant freshness to your room, and there are plenty of health benefits that come with having one in your home too. It doesn’t matter how big your chosen wall is, you will be able to find a planter that is the right size for your requirements, and then all you need to worry about is making sure that you keep the wall well-watered (usually every two to three days), and that you deadhead any flowers as required which will keep your living wall healthy.

There are so many amazing ways to add these spring interior trends to your home, no matter which room you are hoping to bring up to date, and by using colour, metallics, textures, leafy prints, and dark tones, you can create spaces that look like they belong in interior design magazines. So use these ideas as inspiration for your own research and start planning your home décor updates today!
