Most efficient way to run central heating
While the lifespan of the average boiler is 12 years, it’s important to maintain it regularly to ensure maximum longevity. If your boiler and central heating system is working efficiently you’ll use less fuel and will benefit from lower heating bills.
Get your boiler serviced
To ensure your boiler’s running efficiently, arrange for a Gas Safe engineer to service your boiler once a year. Checking that it meets government regulations and is safe, your engineer will be able to test and clean your boiler, alerting you to any necessary repairs.
While you’ll need to pay for an annual service, you’ll save money in the long run by spotting faults that could cause major damage and heath risks if left untreated.
Consider corrosion inhibitors
Helping to maintain your central heating system, corrosion inhibitors will protect against the build-up of sludge and scale. Working to decrease the corrosion rate, which in turn will reduce the risk of your system deteriorating from the inside, inhibitors can increase efficiency by as much as 3%*.
Fire your boiler regularly
To keep your boiler firing as it should, it’s important to turn it on throughout the year – even in the warmer months. Turning it on for up to 10 minutes every so often will keep all the parts in good working order and will help to prevent any nasty surprises when you go to use it during the cold winter season.
Install heating controls
Enabling you to maintain a comfortable temperature within your home without wasting unnecessary heat or energy, room thermostats and thermostatic radiator controls will give you greater power over specific rooms or zones. Installing and correctly using a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves could save you up to £150 annually*.
Draught-proof
In order to retain the heat that your central heating produces, insulating your home is essential.
By providing resistance to heat flow, insulation products reduce heat loss or heat gain by creating a barrier between areas that are significantly different in temperature. You could save up to £30 a year by draught-proofing windows and doors*.
