How Do Condensing Boilers Work?
Condensing boilers heat homes by burning gas or oil as fuel. When this is done, water vapour is released as a by-product and instead of being wasted and released through the flue, a condensing boiler recovers this latent heat; passing it through their heat exchanger which then cools and condenses it back into a liquid form (i.e. condensate). This heat is then used to help warm up the cool water that returns from your radiators.
Types of Condensing Boiler
There are 3 types of condensing boilers; each has its own capabilities and unique features that may be suitable for different properties and central heating requirements. These include:
Combi boilers:
- Manufactured to provide both heating and hot-water from 1 single unit
- Compact in size to save space
- On-demand hot water as no tanks or cylinders are required

Conventional Boilers:
- Designed to deliver heating and hot-water with the use of an additional cold-water tank and hot-water cylinder
- Hot-water could be delivered to multiple taps at once
- Could be fitted with an electrical immersion heater to provide a backup in case of a breakdown/loss of hot-water access

System boilers:
- Manufactured to provide heating and hot-water with the use of an additional hot-water cylinder
- No cold-water tank is required; potentially saving space

Advantages of a Condensing Boiler
In 2005, it became compulsory for all new gas boilers installed in the UK to be condensing; this was introduced to reduce the nation’s impact on the environment. Advantages of condensing boilers include:
Energy-efficiency
Designed to deliver quality central heating with reduced energy wastage, condensing boilers are designed to be highly energy-efficient.
Designed to be environmentally-friendly
Condensing boilers work to lower greenhouse gas emissions, potentially making them more environmentally-friendly than a non-condensing boiler.
Economical to run
By allowing less energy to be wasted, an energy-efficient condensing boiler could help you save up to £200 on your energy bills**.

Which condensing boiler do I need in my home
Condensing boilers come in a range of different sizes, so it could be difficult to figure out which option is best for your home. In order to select a suitable boiler, you should first find out the kW output your home requires. A boiler’s kW output dictates its ability to cope with your heating and hot-water demands; it will usually depend on the number of radiators and bathrooms you have in your home.
Here’s some examples of property types and kW outputs that may be suitable:
24-27kW | 1-2 bedroom, 10 radiators, 1 bathroom |
28-34kW | 3-4 bedroom, 15 radiators, 1-2 bathroom |
35-42kW | 4+ bedroom, 20 radiators, 2+ bathroom |
