When Beechdale local Paul Bakewell, 35, gave Walsall-based HomeServe a ring, the team weren’t expecting it to lead to a proposal!

Paul asked for HomeServe’s assistance to propose to his girlfriend, Tara Barber (31), by surprising her with a very public engagement using the company’s huge advertising billboard outside its call centre.

HomeServe agreed, inviting Paul into its design studios to create his bespoke billboard design which was adorned with photographs of the couple as well as the all important ‘Will You Marry Me” message.

The billboard poster was erected through the night to help keep the proposal a complete surprise for Tara. Paul also joined forces with a friend to create a false emergency which required Paul’s help in the early hours of the morning to ensure he had a reason to leave the house to cover the billboard up!

Paul arranged for the couple’s family and friends to be at the proposal, as well as his daughter, Ellie (11) and Tara’s son, Carrick (6), with HomeServe colleagues also joining in the fun. Paul had also spoken with Tara’s boss who agreed to drive her to a ‘business meeting’ to ensure she would be on site at 10.00am.

Happily, Tara said yes, resulting in loud cheers and hugs from the crowd!

Paul said; “I’d never been so nervous in all my life! But I wanted it to be a really good surprise. If it weren’t for HomeServe, I wouldn’t have been able to do this so thanks to everyone there.”

Tara, a hairdresser from Bloxwich, said; “I had no idea what was going to happen! I couldn’t feel my legs when I got out of the car and saw everyone. It was a complete surprise but I had no hesitation in saying yes!”

John Greaves, HomeServe’s Director of Corporate Affairs, said; “We were as surprised as Tara to receive the call from Paul with his unusual request, but we were only too happy to assist and take care of this for him! We loved being part of the surprise and wish both Paul and Tara a lifetime of happiness.”
