If your troublesome tap is one of the modern, easy to turn on types then it's likely the ceramic disc inside will need replacing. This guide will show you how to get the job done with minimum fuss.
What you'll need:
- Adjustable spanner
- Flat head screw driver
- Cross head screw driver
- Allen key
- Replacement ceramic disc
It's a good idea to get started early in the day, in case you need to get a matching ceramic disc from a DIY store.
Step 1: Prepare
- Turn off the water supply. This can be done by turning the valve found under or near the sink. If not, turn off the mains for the entire house.
- Now run the tap to drain off any water left in the system.
Put the plug in the sink to stop anything from falling down the plug hole while you work.
Step 2: Remove the tap head
- Remove the tap head. If the headgear (top) doesn't just pull off, look for a retaining screw normally found under a decorative hot or cold cap.
- Prise the cap off with a blunt knife or flathead screwdriver.
- Undo the retaining screw and lift off the headgear.
Step 3: The cartridge
- Undo the hexagonal nut with an adjustable wrench.
- Remove the entire cartridge. Bear in mind that these come left or right handed when you get the replacement.
Step 4: Reassemble
- Give all parts, inside and out, a good scrub to remove any built up limescale and debris.
- Reassemble the tap with the new ceramic disc. Take your time to make sure all nuts and screws are tightened properly.
