How to fix squeaky floorboards

Squeaky floorboards are caused by loose boards rubbing against nails or each other. If you're fed up of creeping about on creaky floors then it's an easy problem to solve.

What you'll need:

  • Talcum powder
  • Damp cloth
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • 50 millimetre screws

Step 1: Talc it up

Locating the mischievous floorboard is easy; step on each board, one at a time until you find the culprit.

Sprinkle talcum powder (or flour if you don't have any talc) around the board and sweep it into the cracks. Add a little extra on the nails. The powder will ease the friction between the boards and nails, hopefully eradicating the squeaking.

Don't vacuum; wipe away the excess with a damp cloth.

Step 2: Screw it down

If the powder trick didn't work then get your drill at the ready.

Screw in a 50 millimetre screw alongside the present nails. You need to position the screw next to the nails to guarantee it goes into a joist and avoids any pipes and electrics running underneath.
