About South West

The South West region, with a total population of about 5 million, is a region of outstanding beauty consisting of the county of Wiltshire, where South West England begins less than an hour from London to Bristol and Bath, with centuries of history and culture. There is also Devon, with two coastlines and wide open spaces and Cornwall, bounded by the sea and steeped in Celtic tradition.

The South West region is largely rural, with many small towns and villages; a higher proportion of people live in such areas than in any other English region.

Traditionally, the area has been well known for producing Cheddar cheese (originating in the village of Cheddar in the Mendip Hills), Devon cream teas, and Somerset cider. It is now equally well known as the home of the Glastonbury festival, trip hop music, Cornwall's seafood restaurants, and surfing beaches.

It also stands out in terms of scenic beauty, with two National Parks and four World Heritage Sites. It also has the longest coastline of any region in England, at over 702 miles (1,130 km), much of which is now protected from further substantial development because of its environmental importance.

Majestic cathedrals grace cities like Salisbury, Gloucester, Wells, Truro and Exeter while Bath boasts famous Roman remains and Georgian splendour. Maritime history features strongly in Plymouth from where the Pilgrim Fathers and Sir Francis Drake sailed. And for contemporary arts, Bristol, the largest city in the South West, is home to the wonderful Arnolfini.
