The History of CORGI

CORGI (Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers) was founded in 1970 with the task of ensuring that gas work was carried out safely. Initially, gas installers could become affiliated to CORGI on a voluntary basis. In 1991, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) asked CORGI to maintain a mandatory register of competent gas installers in the UK. CORGI became the “Council for Registered Gas Installers (CORGI)”.

CORGI Plumbers, CORGI Gas Engineers and CORGI Gas Installers

The correct name for a CORGI registered tradesman is a 'CORGI registered installer' but other terms such as 'CORGI registered plumber', 'CORGI registered engineer' and 'CORGI gas fitter' are often used. “Installer” may imply gas appliances that are being fitted for the first time but CORGI registration applies equally to tradesmen who carry out gas appliance repairs, gas servicing and gas appliance replacement.

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 make it a legal requirement for most landlords to safely maintain all gas appliances and flues. The legal requirement is that gas appliances have an annual safety check by a CORGI registered installer and that a CP12 Gas inspection certificate is issued and a copy provided to tenants.
