Leaking Roof Tips

A leaking roof is a pain, but can be easy to ignore, until severe weather hits and rain-water pours into your home.

Often, we don't even notice roof damage until there's heavy weather but all you can do in the middle of a storm is collect the water and use plastic sheeting to protect everything inside:

  • Do not attempt to fix the roof until the weather calms down. Even then, the roof may well be too damaged and dangerous to attempt a repair.
  • Book a professional roofing contractor immediately
  • Contact the relevant manufacturer or contractor, if your roof is under a warranty

Short-term emergency tips

  • Remove excess water from your roof
  • Check roof drains and scuppers to be sure they aren't blocked, but only if you can do so safely.
  • Clear the drains, but be cautious - drain suction is often strong enough to pull your arms or tools down, along with the water
  • Locate the leak if you can without putting yourself in any danger, although it's often difficult and best left to a professional.
