Flood Safety Tips

After the flood you are likely to be feeling worn out and exhausted, but also keen to get back to your home, to see what you can salvage and start the clean up.

The problem is that flood damage may have made your home a hazard; structural damage, electrical damage, broken gas appliances and even pollution can cause a nasty accident.

The first thing you need to do is call in the experts, it's not worth risking an injury and Homeserve guarantee to send qualified electricians and gas engineers in an emergency, just call 0800 073 3311.

Surviving the after effects of a flood:

Flood Safety Don'ts

  1. Don't turn on: Don't enter your property until the mains have been turned off and never use electrical appliances that may be wet. Call an approved electrician first.
  2. Don't forget gas: Gas appliances and gas control valves that may have got damp, or been submerged in water, could cause an explosion and fire. Get them checked by a Homeserve CORGI Gas Engineer.
  3. Don't get a shock: Watch out for downed power lines; they can electrify an entire building
  4. Don't light up: Gas can get trapped in a building after a flood, so use a battery powered torch and never use open flames to see your way
  5. Don't drink: Drinking water can become polluted, so get it tested before you drink it again

Flood Safety Do's

  • Stay safe: Make sure it is safe to go back in, structural damage may make it dangerous, slippery surfaces make falling a risk and rooms where water is bulging from the ceiling may not be safe to enter at all
  • Keep it clean: Wear protective clothing and keep washing your hands, flooding can lead to pollution and contamination
  • Keep kids out: Nobody should enter the property until it's safe but even afterwards it's best to keep kids out of harms way
  • Take it slow: You're likely to be stressed and tired in a flood clear up, which is when accidents happen
