Leather Furniture Tips

Leather looks hardy but like all furniture, it needs a bit of TLC to stay that way.

If you don't already have one, you'll find the Homeserve Leather Care Kit an important investment to keep leather supple, smooth and stain free. Regular cleaning solutions can cause crazing or peeling of leather.

Follow our leather care tips too, unless you have Aniline or Nubuck leather furniture, for which we've provided advice below.

Easy leather care tips:

  • Wet wipe: Never use wet wipes, use special leather wipes or a damp cloth to clean leather every week or so
  • Complete clean: Clean at least three times a year using special Homeserve products
  • Pay attention: All leathers react differently to cleaning, so test your cleaning product prior to use and keep a careful eye on colour coming off on the sponge and the leather underneath it, the entire time you clean
  • Foam up: Always foam up the cleaning products and never use the product neat.
  • Go gently: Two or three gentle cleans will give the best results than heavy spot cleans
  • Don't take shortcuts: Don't resort to ‘kitchen' or ‘workshop' products; these can cause severe damage that may be impossible to repair. If a stain is serious, leather care professionals can do the work for you.

Cleaning Aniline and Nubuck Leathers

Aniline or Nubuck leathers require intensive care to keep their look and feel:

  • Vacuum it: Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt.
  • Light touch: Add a small amount of special cleaning fluid to a damp sponge, produce light foam and apply gently to the damp leather, rinsing as necessary.
  • Experiment:  Get used to the way your leather needs to be cleaned, practise on a hidden area and beware of letting it get too damp.
  • Dry out: Allow the clean leather to dry naturally or dry it gently with a hair dryer
  • Protect it: Use a suitable leather surface protector after every clean.
