The most common causes of a leaking toilet are a cracked toilet pan, a damaged cistern or a leaking overflow pipe.
Before you start any work, remember to turn the water supply off and empty the toilet by flushing it.
Cracked toilet pan
This can be temporarily repaired by emptying the pan, then filling any hole or crack from the inside with specialist putty. Your local DIY store will let you know which putty is best for the job.
You will need to replace the toilet pan as soon as possible.
Damaged cistern
This can also be temporarily repaired by emptying the cistern, then filling any hole or crack from the inside with specialist putty.
You will then need to arrange for the cistern to be replaced.
Leaking overflow pipe
If the leak is coming from a pipe joint or a crack in a pipe then see our article on leaking pipes for further advice.
