How to get rid of squirrels

If squirrels have become a problem then there are a number of ways that you can deal with the issue.

Stop squirrels getting into your home

The RSPCA advise the use of strong wire netting with a mesh size no larger than 25 millimetres to block any access holes, plus repair to any slipped slates, rotten soffits or missing bricks etc. to prevent access.

If squirrels have already gained entry, it is essential to ensure there are no squirrels remaining in the loft before access is blocked.

Get rid of squirrels in your garden

Many squirrel-proof feeders are sold to prevent squirrels from raiding the bird feeder. Some bird seed supplements contain pepper additives that are distasteful to squirrels but harmless to both them and birds.

You can protect your bulbs with wire mesh or an inverted wire basket firmly staked to the ground. The plants can grow up through the mesh but can't be unearthed.

Get rid of squirrels altogether

If you are determined to get rid of the current squirrels in your vicinity then the only way to do this is by trapping and exterminating the animals.

Lethal control of squirrels is permitted but should only be carried out by qualified pest control officers. Remember, it's a specialist job to treat for squirrels and requires specific knowledge in order to carry out the work safely, humanely and in compliance with legal requirements.

Does the council remove squirrels for free?

Most councils don't treat squirrel infestations.
