Preventing future flood damage

If your area is prone to flooding, take some simple steps to ensure that your family and valuables stay safe when the waters rise.

To prevent future flood damage we recommend that you:

  • Move valuables up high
Move as many valuables as possible to the higher positions in the home (first floors or higher).
  • Seal important documents
Seal important documents, photographs and similar in plastic bags, along with a list of useful phone numbers.
  • Make an emergency kit
Make an emergency kit and keep it in an easy to find place. It should contain:
    • Torch
    • Bottled water
    • Mobile phone (if possible)
    • Any necessary medication
    • First aid kit
    • Radio
    • Wellington boots
    • Rubber gloves
    • Disinfectant
    • Soap
    • Towels
  • Make a plan
Make plans for when and where to meet family members, as well as what to do with any domestic animals (either moving them to a safer area or keeping them in an upstairs room) in the event of a flood.
